PM Narendra Modi had launched the Global Biofuels Alliance in the presence of US President Joe Biden, President of Brazil Luiz Inacio, President of Argentina Alberto Fernández, and Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni. The alliance was a priority under India’s G20 Presidency.
President Lula appreciated the global recognition of biofuels as a solution to greenhouse gas effects and emissions. The Global Biofuels Alliance aims to strengthen markets, facilitate global biofuels trade, share policy lessons, and provide technical support for national biofuels programs worldwide.
Nineteen countries, including India, joined the alliance as initiating members. The International Energy Agency estimates that global sustainable biofuel production must triple by 2030 to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. India has set ambitious goals for carbon neutrality and increased ethanol blending in gasoline.
During the press conference, President Lula also mentioned Brazil’s interest in discussing permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
