NASA Confirms No Threat as 17-Foot Asteroid 2024 TF Approaches Earth

On October 4, 2024, an asteroid named 2024 TF, approximately 17 feet in size, will make a close approach to Earth. Roughly the size of a small airplane, the asteroid will pass at a distance of 186,000 miles around 75% of the distance between the Earth and the Moon. While the approach sounds close by astronomical standards, NASA has assured that 2024 TF poses no immediate danger to the planet.
Asteroids of this size frequently pass by Earth without causing harm. NASA and other space agencies around the world constantly monitor these space rocks, known as minor planets, to track their movements and assess any potential risk. Although small asteroids like 2024 TF often approach Earth, they rarely pose a significant threat due to their size and distance.


What Are Asteroids?

In Earth’s history, asteroid impacts have caused significant geological changes, including the Chicxulub impact 66 million years ago, which led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. As a result, asteroid tracking has become a critical area of research for planetary defense.
