Maldives President Assures India ‘Will Never Undermine Your Security,’ Prioritizes Bilateral Cooperation

New Delhi: Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, during his first bilateral visit to India on Sunday, emphasized his nation’s commitment to maintaining strong ties with New Delhi, reassuring that the Maldives would never act to undermine India’s security. Muizzu, often perceived as a ‘pro-China’ leader due to his electoral ‘India Out’ campaign, clarified that India remains a “valued partner and friend” and that cooperation across various sectors, including defense, is a priority.
In an exclusive interview with The Times of India, Muizzu highlighted the historical bond between the two countries, stating, “The Maldives’ relationship with India is built on respect and shared interests.” He also recognized India as one of the Maldives’ largest trade and development partners, particularly underlining India’s role in the economic and tourism sectors.

This visit marks a turning point in the diplomatic relations between the two nations following a tense period last year when several Maldivian ministers made controversial remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading to diplomatic friction. The Maldives government took swift action by suspending the ministers involved and distancing itself from their comments.
Muizzu, scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi later today, affirmed the Maldives’ commitment to fostering international collaborations while ensuring that no partnerships would compromise India’s security. He stressed the importance of diversifying the Maldives’ international relations to reduce over-dependence on any one country, without directly mentioning China.
Referring to India as a crucial player in regional security, Muizzu reassured that the Maldives’ policies would not conflict with India’s interests. He called on Indian tourists to return to the Maldives, praising their positive contribution to the nation’s economy, particularly its tourism sector.

This visit comes at a critical juncture as India and the Maldives seek to restore and strengthen their ties. Both nations have reaffirmed their shared interests in regional security, as highlighted by India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, during his visit to Male in August. The growing cooperation between the two nations promises continued collaboration in defense, infrastructure, and economic development, cementing their relationship as key allies in the Indian Ocean region.
