New Delhi: Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to introduce three revised criminal law bills in Parliament, aiming to replace colonial-era laws. The bills, redrafted based on recommendations from a parliamentary standing committee, were withdrawn by the Union government on Monday.
Shah is expected to present the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Bill, 2023, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita Bill, 2023, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Bill, 2023. Additionally, two bills proposing 33% reservation for women in the legislative assemblies of Jammu and Kashmir and Puducherry are likely to be introduced.
The bills were initially introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 11, but the government decided to withdraw them for revisions. The proposed amendments align with recommendations made by the standing committee on home affairs, which suggested nearly 50 amendments in its report adopted on November 6.
The three bills aim to replace the colonial-era Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) of 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872. The revised versions will be introduced by Amit Shah around 5 pm on Tuesday. The move marks a significant step towards updating and modernizing the existing criminal laws in India.
