New Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday said the country’s relations with China would remain “strained”, before attending a Quad summit in Japan with US President Joe Biden and leaders from Japan and India.
“It is China that has changed, not Australia, and Australia must always stand for our values and we will stand for the government I lead,” Albanese told a news conference, after taking office as the 31st prime minister. Australia’s relations with China, its main trading partner, are at an all-time low after a series of controversies over trade issues, the origin of the coronavirus and allegations from Australia of foreign interference.
