Akshay Kumar confirmed that he backed out of Hera Pheri 3

Days after Akshay Kumar confirmed that he backed out of Hera Pheri 3 due to creative differences, his franchise co-star Suniel Shetty has reignited hopes that the actor might make a comeback. In a recent interview, Suniel said that he was “overwhelmed” by the development and spoke to the makers to see if there was any way for Akshay to return.

Last week, reports claimed that Akshay backed out of the third film in the successful Hera Pheri franchise. The actor himself confirmed this during his speech at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit. “I was offered the film but I was not happy with the script. I have to do what people want to see. That’s why I stepped back. I took a step back. It is part of my life and journey for me. I’m also very sorry that I can’t do it. But I’m not happy with how creative things have turned out,” he said.

Now, reacting to the development, Suniel Shetty told Mid-Day, “Everything was on track, but I don’t know what suddenly happened [that] Akshay is no longer a part of it. Once I [finish] the Dharavi Bank promotions, I will sit down with Firoz [Nadiadwala, producer] and understand why and how it happened. Akshay, Paresh and I have committed to this film and I am amazed by the twist.”

The actor added that he is still hopeful that things can fall into place. “Hera Pheri 3 cannot be the same without Akshay. Raju, Babu bhaiyya and Shyam are iconic characters whose paths have been shared. There is palpable excitement when you mention the film. I want to see if things can still fall into place,” he added.

Hera Pheri released in 2000, starring Akshay, Suniel, Paresh Rawal and Tabu. Directed by Priyadarshan, the film was a success and earned ₹18 crore at the box office. The sequel to Phir Hera Pheri was directed by the late Neeraj Vora. The 2006 film grossed ₹69 million at the box office. The planned third installment has been in limbo for years. Akshay will now replace Kartik Aryan in it.
