AI Technology Takes Center Stage at Two Sessions, Focus on Developing LLMs with Chinese Characteristics

As the global artificial intelligence (AI) industry enters a new phase of development, AI technology is poised to be a focal point during the two sessions. Members of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee have emphasized the importance of independent innovation in the AI arena, advocating for the development of large language models (LLMs) with Chinese characteristics.

Xu Jiuping, a CPPCC National Committee member and professor at Sichuan University, highlighted China’s vast market and active data-producing entities as key factors driving AI innovation. He stressed the need for China to forge its own path in AI development while drawing inspiration from global best practices.

Zhou Hongyi, founder and chairman of 360 Security Technology and a CPPCC National Committee member, acknowledged the time required for China to catch up with the US in LLM core technology. However, he proposed leveraging China’s industry advantages and diverse application scenarios to develop LLMs tailored to Chinese needs.

Emphasizing the integration of LLMs with business processes, Zhou outlined the potential of LLMs to drive digital transformation, particularly in traditional manufacturing. He suggested incentivizing enterprises to integrate LLMs into their operations, thereby accelerating industrial digitalization and contributing to the country’s new productive forces.

Qi Xiangdong, chairman of Qi An Xin Technology Group and a CPPCC National Committee member, highlighted China’s leading position in the digital economy, citing the country’s abundant data resources and diverse application scenarios as competitive advantages for the AI sector.

Overall, members of the CPPCC National Committee emphasized the importance of nurturing indigenous AI innovation while harnessing China’s unique strengths to drive the development of LLMs with Chinese characteristics. With a focus on integration, innovation, and leveraging existing resources, China aims to further solidify its position as a global leader in AI technology.
