The National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), is setting up a 65 kW ocean thermal energy conversion plant at Kavaratti Lakshadweep and the work has just started. This facility will power a desalination plant based on low-temperature thermal desalination (LTTD) to convert seawater into potable water. The capacity of this LTTD plant is 100,000 liters of potable water per day.
The Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) has launched the Deep Ocean Mission (DOM). Details on deep-sea mining, underwater robotics, the development of ocean climate change advisory services, and technological innovations to explore and conserve deep-sea biodiversity within the DOM over the next few years:Design and development of a prototype manned submersible designed for a water depth of 6,000 meters, incorporating technologies for underwater vehicles and underwater robotics
Design and development of technologies for the extraction of deep-sea resources such as Polymetallic nodules from the central part of the Indian Ocean at a water depth of 5500 m.Inventory, sample archiving and development of a DNA bank of the deep-sea fauna of the northern Indian Ocean through systematic sampling using a remotely operated vehicle.Development of ocean climate change advisory services to assess climate risks due to sea level rise, intensity and frequency of cyclones, storms and wind waves, biogeochemistry and changing harmful algal blooms in coastal waters of India. This information was given by the Secretary of State (I/C) for M/O Earth Sciences and M/o Science and Technology, Dr. Jitendra Singh.
