Technology Focus: DOT selected top 30 bidders who were tied up with telecom service providers to showcase their products/applications in 5G trials

The government is enabling Indian technology companies to develop 4G, 5G and E-Band spectrum products and solutions through various initiatives, including funding, hackathons and pilot projects.There are domestic technology companies working on various 4G, 5G and E-Band network product systems. The government has approved funding for 5G and E-Band technologies under its Digital Communication Innovation Square (DCIS) scheme with defined milestones and deliverables.
In line with Atmanirbhar Government’s initiative, BSNL has been directed to deploy Indian Core for 4G network. BSNL has conducted a detailed Proof of Concept (PoC) of domestic 4G technologies on its network. Indian entities viz. Tejas, C-DoT supported by M/s TCS for system integration has successfully met most of the standard requirements for a carrier grade 4G mobile network as per 3GPP specifications.
To promote the manufacturing of telecom and network products in the country, the government announced on 24/02/2021 the Production Support Scheme (PLI) with a financial outlay of Rs. 12,195 crore during the program period. The scheme is aimed at supporting the domestic production of specific telecommunications and network products, which include 4G/5G products. To build a strong ecosystem for 5G, the guidelines for the scheme have been amended to facilitate the design-based manufacturing of 5G products in the country.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) organized a 5G Hackathon to develop solutions that will boost technology adoption and create new use cases leveraging the capabilities of 5G technology. DoT selected top 30 bidders who were tied up with telecom service providers to showcase their products/applications in 5G trials.The government has also approved funds to implement pilot projects of 4G and E-Band products in rural areas under the Universal Service Obligation Funding (USOF) pilot programme. The pilot projects are to ensure mobile coverage and expand high-speed connections in rural areas.The government has also funded the development of domestic 5G test equipment by leading academic and research institutions working in the field of technology. It can be used to test domestic products anywhere in the 5G chain as well as enable technology diffusion for Indian entities.This information was given today by Minister of State for Communications Shri Devusinh Chauhan in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.
