At least 105 people, mostly tourists, were rescued after flash floods left them stranded in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul and Spiti districts on Sunday. Officials said tourists were mostly taken to Koksar hours after the water level in the Dorni River rose after heavy rain caused flash floods. A parked vehicle was damaged after boulders fell on it.
“All the stranded persons were rescued around 1.30 am… All are safe,” Superintendent of Police Manav Verma said, adding that they have been provided with adequate food and logistics.
Officials said the flash floods disrupted traffic on National Highway 505, which connects Sissa and Nako, prompting authorities to launch a joint three-hour rescue operation. Border Road Organization (BRO), district administration and state police were involved in the operation.
Officials said the BRO has rushed three trucks to the rescue even as flash floods were reported from four places in Lahulal and Spiti districts, blocking nine roads. Minister of State Ram Lal Markanda was stranded in the Miyar Valley after flash floods disrupted road connectivity.
