Technology focus: Microsoft Corp’s MS Teams was back up for some users, the company said

Microsoft is an American multinational technology corporation that manufactures computer software, consumer electronics, personal computers, and related services. Its best-known software products are the Windows family of operating systems, the Microsoft Office suite, and the Internet Explorer and Edge web browsers. Its flagship hardware products include the Xbox video game console and the Microsoft Surface line of touchscreen personal computers. Microsoft ranked 21st on the 2020 Fortune 500 list of the largest US corporations by total revenueIt is one of the Big Five American information technology companies, along with Google, Amazon, Apple and Meta.

Microsoft Corp’s MS Teams was back up for some users, the company said on Thursday (July 21), after an hour-long outage disrupted the chat app for thousands of customers. The Redmond, Washington-based company pinpointed the outage “on a recent deployment that contained a broken connection to an internal storage service,” but did not disclose the number of users affected by the outage.” We are receiving many reports that users have access to Microsoft Teams, and many features are beginning to be restored,” the company said.

MS Teams is an integral part of the day-to-day operations for businesses, as workers use the service to communicate internally, send messages to each other, make calls and organize workflows. As of Wednesday, there were more than 4,800 incidents of people reporting problems with Microsoft Teams, according to Downdetector.com, which tracks outages by collecting status reports from sources including bugs submitted by users on its platform. As of 12:15 ET (12:15 Singapore time), about 530 users are currently affected, Downdetector said. The web monitoring firm also previously revealed that there were more than 150 cases of people reporting issues with Microsoft Office 365.

Microsoft tweeted that it had identified a consequential impact on multiple Microsoft 365 services with Teams integration, such as Microsoft Word, Office Online and SharePoint Online.” We have taken measures to divert some of the traffic to provide some environmental relief,” it said. Microsoft said in its January earnings call that Teams surpassed 270 million monthly active users as demand for remote business teleconferencing and messaging tools surged and became a key element for organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic as people worked from home. Outages last year also hit other major tech companies, with a nearly six-hour outage on Meta platforms knocking WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger out of reach for billions of users last October.
