Sports Focus: England’s hopes of restricting India to under 400 were snuffed out by Bumrah who smashed 31 not out off 16 balls

Jasprit Bumrah smashed England with a bat and then blew up their top order with a ball to put India in a tight spot in the fifth re-scheduled draw at Edgbaston on Saturday. Only 38.5 overs could be played on the second day blocked by rain and Bumrah was in control, first with a shot and then with the ball. As a result of his impressive attack, England midfielder Stuart Broad cut down on the most expensive over-the-top test cricket, netting 35 runs in eight games involving wide and wide ball.

The dry India captain then smashed England’s top innings by three runs and the hosts closed out 84-5, 332 behind runs and needed 133 to avoid following, turning India’s first innings 416. Jonny Bairstow was hitting 12 when the captain. Ben Stokes was about to open his account, England were hit by Bumrah’s early strikes. The seamstress broke Alex Lees’ (six) defenses by delivering lengths and had Zak Crawley (nine) and Ollie Pope (10) arrested on the slips before the rain returned to stop India’s trial. Mohammed Shami upset Joe Root but was unlucky not to be rewarded for his efforts.

Recognizing the importance of Root’s wicket, India wasted an update trying to get him to Shami’s party which ensured the games would be over. Mohammed Siraj won the Indian wicket with a rising shot that Root wanted to cut but ended up being caught on the 31st.Jack Leach came out as a night guard but only pulled five balls before Shami pulled him out from behind. He could have died in Shami’s overdose last season but Virat Kohli dropped him in the head.

Earlier, after the tour team started again in 338-7, late-night batsman Ravindra Jadeja (104) finished his third century of the test before falling to James Anderson who returned 5-60 points. Jadeja’s 222-run stand with fellow captain Rishabh Pant put India back in the tournament after dropping to 98-5 on Friday.

England’s hopes of placing India in the under-400s were scored by Bumrah who hit 31 unbeaten in 16 balls. Broad released Mohammed Shami with his 550 test wicket before the tailor was defeated by Bumrah, who leads India after general captain Rohit Sharma was tested for COVID-19. India are 2-1 up in the unfinished series last year following charges against COVID-19 in the Indian camp ahead of the final match at Old Trafford.
