Science and Technology Focus: NIMHANS has established the association between meditation and proper sleep organization

The researchers found that practitioners of meditation shift from light to deep sleep faster, and their transition time does not increase with age compared with those who are not accustomed to meditation, and sleep duration is much longer among the first, and this time decreases with age among the latter. They demonstrated a stable sleep pattern among Vipassana meditation staff.

SLEEP

Changes in normal sleep (from excessive sleep to light sleep) are seen in sleep problems, and over the years, these changes increase. Traditionally, meditation has been suggested as a way to reduce sleep disturbances. However, scientific evidence for the relationship between meditation and sleep disorders is lacking. A study conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (NIMHANS) has established a link between meditation and sleep quality and sleep stability.

A study supported by the SATYAM program of the Department of Science and Technology, which investigated the importance of meditation on sleep association and the relationship between sleep, meditation, and well-being, has shown different changes brought about by Vipassana sleep patterns. The team led by Prof. Bindu M. Kutty tested the effectiveness of Vipassana meditation on micro-sleep architecture Dynamics, especially spindle dynamics and Electroencephalogram (EEG) Dynamics that determine the role of meditation in thalamocortical synchronization pathways essential for sleep intensity and continuity, memory integration etc. The study was published in the journal Neuro modulation: Technology in Neural Interface.

Several event-related stimuli (ERPs) produced by the brain have been identified during slow eye movement (NREM) and REM sleep, and important ERPs during the various sleep phases have been shown in the study. These ERPs responses are potential indicators of sleep stability. Sleep protocol involving general sleep study (Polysomnography), sleep ERP and tACS was proposed, tested and measured to determine sleep stability in control subjects and meditation. Includes indicators / steps that capture sleep variability (stage shift), sleep initiation (sleep delay), sleep continuity, sleep depth etc. With the help of this protocol, the study evaluated sleep phase shifts and sleep progression stages to assess quality. for sleeping. The work also provides an overview of the use of Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulations (tACSs – a device that uses electrical cords to improve brain function) while lying to normal healthy people and thinkers to measure sleep, and evaluates the effect of taACS in the end brain oscillations are produced using different waves.
