Japan looks to resume tourism discount as COVID simplifies

The Japanese government is considering re-launching a national travel rebate campaign later this month to help the tourism industry recover from the collapse of COVID-19, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Saturday.

The updated “Go Go” campaign will probably serve as an important step in promoting consumer demand, the business reported daily, without quoting sources. Japan will ease border controls to allow foreign visitors to enter from July 10 as the coronavirus infection subsides. The government will decide on the campaign soon, Nikkei said, without specifying a time.

Officials of the Japan Tourism Agency were not immediately available for comment outside of working hours. The campaign, launched in July 2020 when COVID gained power, funded part of the cost of travel, reaching 20,000 yen ($ 150) per night, per traveler. The program helped boost tourism but was canceled five months later as the epidemic escalated.
