PARAM PORUL Supercomputer unlocked at NIT : Tiruchirappalli

PARAM PORUL, a state-of-the-art Supercomputer at NIT Tiruchirappalli awarded nationally under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM) – a joint initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), was launched on May 25 , 2022 by Shri Bhaskar Bhat, Chairman of the Board of Governors, Tiruchirappalli before the courtesy of Prof. G. Aghila, Director, NIT Tiruchirappalli; Shri E Magesh, Director General, C-DAC, Shri Naveen Kumar, NSM- HPC Division, MeitY; Shri S A Kumar, Counselor, NSM, MeitY, Dr. Hemant Darbari, Mission Director-NSM, Dr Namrata Pathak, DST; Drs. Nagaboopathy Mohan, DST, Shri Sanjay Wandhekar, Executive Director, C-DAC, and senior officials from MeitY, DST, NIT Tiruchirappalli and C-DAC. The PARAM PORUL supercomputing site was established under Section 2 of the NSM, where a large portion of the components used to build the system were built and integrated into the country, along with a host of traditional software developed by C-DAC, in line with Make in India.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between NIT Tiruchirappalli and the Center for Development in Advanced Computing (C-DAC) on 12 October 2020 to establish the 838 TeraFlops Supercomputing Facility under NSM. The system is equipped with a combination of CPU nodes, GPU nodes, High Memory Nodes, high storage capacity and high performance Infiniband interconnect to meet the computer needs of various scientific and engineering applications. The PARAM PORUL system is based on Direct Contact Liquid liquid cooling technology to achieve energy efficiency and thus reduce operating costs. Many applications from various scientific fields such as Climate and Climate, Bioinformatics, Computational Chemistry, Molecular Dynamics, Material Sciences, Computational Fluid Dynamics etc. included in the program for the benefit of researchers. This state-of-the-art computer program will be a great addition to the research community.

NIT, Tiruchirappalli has been conducting research in areas of public interest such as Health, Agriculture, Climate, and Financial Services. The NSM-affiliated institution will consolidate this study. The new efficient computer center will help researchers solve major problems in various fields of Science and engineering. Part of the computing power will also be allocated to nearby educational and research institutions as mandated by the NSM. In addition, NSM has funded a number of application research projects using this Supercomputing Center which includes researchers from other Indian institutions and industries. Overall, the Supercomputing Center will give significant impetus to Indian research and development programs and industries to reach international acclaim.

Under the NSM, to date 15 computers have been installed nationwide with a computer capacity of 24 petaflops. All of these great computers are made in India and work with a stack of native software.
