South Korea’s new president, Yoon Suk-yeol, said on Wednesday that the security situation on the Korean peninsula was “critical”, citing rumors that the North could test nuclear weapons.Yoon made the remarks during a meeting with the secretary, urging officials to remain vigilant to respond better to such situations, according to a report from the South Korean presidency.
“The security situation is dire, and many expatriates are also worried as it is being speculated that (North Korea) will resume nuclear deterrence,” the new president said. Yoon took office on Tuesday amid tensions in the Korean Peninsula, with North Korea exploring a series of new weapons, including the most recent one, three days before his inauguration. He also said at the meeting that inflation was a major economic problem.
“The economy is in a very difficult state and the biggest problem is inflation,” he said. “We need to carefully review the various indicators and continue to study pricing mechanisms based on price analysis.”
