Ten Bridges Down Since 2018, Latest Collapse Leads to Suspension of Sixteen Engineers

In Bihar, an alarming trend of bridge collapses continues to plague the region, with Kishanganj, East Champaran, Araria, Siwan, Saran, and Madhubani being the most affected areas. Since 2018, ten bridges have collapsed, including a recent incident involving a bridge over a canal. This issue has intensified, with several bridges collapsing during last year’s monsoon season.

The situation took a dramatic turn on Thursday when sixteen engineers were suspended following the collapse of a bridge in Saran just a fortnight ago. The Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, acted swiftly, demanding all evidence related to the collapse and ordering immediate inspections of all bridges in the state, including older structures. This inspection is mandated to be completed within two weeks.

Minister Ashok Kumar has pointed fingers at the Deputy Chief Minister for failing to implement an effective bridge maintenance policy. He cited political factors as a significant contributor to the recent bridge collapse in Saran, which led to the suspension of the sixteen engineers.

The latest incident highlights a growing crisis in Bihar’s infrastructure, as bridges in multiple districts are failing, endangering lives and disrupting connectivity. The swift action by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar reflects the urgency and seriousness of the situation, with the hope that thorough inspections and subsequent reforms will prevent future collapses.
