Elon Musk Accuses Vice President Kamala Harris of Spreading Misinformation on Abortion Stance

02 July 2024, Elon Musk CEO of Tesla and founder of SpaceX, has openly criticized US Vice President Kamala Harris, accusing her of spreading misinformation regarding former President Donald Trump‘s position on abortion.

In a pointed social media post on X (formerly Twitter), Musk shared a screenshot of Harris’s comment, stating, “When will politicians, or at least the intern who runs their account, learn that lying on this platform doesn’t work anymore?”

The controversy arises amid the heated run-up to the November 5 US Presidential elections, where Republican nominee Donald Trump is set to challenge Democratic nominee Joe Biden. Harris’s post asserted, “Donald Trump would ban abortion nationwide,” a claim that faced immediate scrutiny. The social media platform’s Community Note feature, introduced under Musk’s leadership in 2022, flagged Harris’s statement. The Community Note clarified, “President Trump has repeatedly stated he would not sign a national abortion ban,” and provided supporting references.

Musk responded to Harris’s post by emphasizing that Trump had “clearly said he would not do so” during a recent US Presidential debate with Biden. Following the 2022 Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, the regulation of abortion rights was delegated to individual states, a significant shift from the previous federal safeguard.

Reactions from social media users varied. One user commented, “The mask is off. The liars are being exposed. It’s glorious to watch in real time.” Another countered, “Trump said repeatedly that he wouldn’t overturn Roe v Wade and look what happened. Spare me.” Other users praised the Community Note feature, with one stating, “Community notes ain’t perfect but it’s better than anything else out there,” while another added, “Elon is fact-checking Kamala Harris.”

This latest development underscores the intensifying political landscape as the US prepares for the upcoming Presidential elections.
