New Delhi: The Department of Science and Technology (DST) organized a national brainstorming session on “Transforming Science, Technology, and Innovation Ecosystems of India” today at the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). The day-long event focused on critical areas such as research and innovation, equity and inclusion, technology development, international cooperation, and governance in science, technology, and innovation.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of DST, emphasized DST’s pioneering role in developing science and technology policies to facilitate R&D. He highlighted DST’s efforts in establishing centers for policy research, formulating science and technology indicators, and conducting evidence-based analysis of the country’s scientific and technological ecosystem. Prof. Karandikar stated, “We need agile and adaptive policies that can sync with the rapid transformation of the S&T ecosystem, fostering ease of research and supporting deep tech startups.”
Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, President of INSA, underscored the complexity of forming science, technology, and innovation (STI) policies, which involved consultations with around 50,000 stakeholders. He pointed out the importance of appropriate policies in driving scientific progress and cited the National Geospatial Policy as an example of how policy can unlock economic benefits.
Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Senior Adviser at DST, outlined DST’s policy research initiatives and detailed the formulation of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (STIP) 2020.
The session aimed to develop a comprehensive roadmap for national science policy development, identify specific policy recommendations to address critical challenges, foster collaboration and knowledge exchange between policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders, and establish a platform for ongoing dialogue and collaborative policy development efforts.
