Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar has expressed his disappointment over a comedy show’s portrayal of him, labelling it as “exceptionally poor taste.” Taking to his Instagram Stories on Sunday night, Johar shared his dismay at the disrespectful portrayal, particularly from within the industry.
In his Instagram post, Johar recounted an unsettling experience while watching television with his mother. He described witnessing a promo for a reality comedy show on a supposedly respectable channel, where a comic was mimicking him in a manner he found distasteful.
Expressing his disappointment, Johar wrote, “I expect this from trolls and faceless and nameless people but when your own industry can disrespect someone who has been in the business for over 25 years it speaks volumes about the times we live in… this doesn’t even anger me it just makes me sad!”
Johar also shared a reaction from fellow industry colleague Ekta Kapoor, who echoed his sentiments. Kapoor acknowledged instances of similar disrespect in various platforms, including award functions, and expressed solidarity with Johar. Re-posting Kapoor’s message, Johar thanked her with affection.
While Johar refrained from naming the specific show or channel, online speculation pointed towards a recent promo shared by Sony Entertainment Television for the comedy show “Madness Machayenge India Ko Hasayenge.” The promo featured a mimicry act parodying Johar and his iconic chat show “Koffee With Karan,” referring to it as “Toffee with Churan.”
This incident follows Johar’s recent social media posts advocating for self-acceptance and creativity in Bollywood. Earlier this month, he shared insights on the industry’s trends and emphasized the importance of prioritizing creativity and conviction over fleeting trends.
Meanwhile, Johar is gearing up for the release of his upcoming sports drama film “Mr. and Mrs. Mahi,” starring Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao in lead roles. The film is scheduled to premiere on May 31, adding to Johar’s diverse portfolio as a filmmaker.
