Qatar Extends Contract of Asian Cup-Winning Coach Until 2026

Qatar’s triumph in the Asian Cup has led to a long-term commitment with their coach, Marquez Lopez, as the Qatar Football Association announced a contract extension until 2026. Lopez, who initially took over on an interim basis, guided the team to victory in the tournament’s final, securing their second consecutive title.

The Qatar Football Association expressed appreciation to Al-Wakrah Sports Club for facilitating Lopez’s appointment as the national team head coach. Lopez’s next challenge will be leading Qatar in the Asia preliminaries for the 2026 World Cup, with their upcoming match against Kuwait scheduled for March 21.

Despite being tournament hosts in 2022, Qatar has never qualified for the World Cup finals through preliminaries. However, their current position atop the group, which includes India and Afghanistan, with six points from two games, presents an optimistic outlook for their World Cup aspirations.
