Farmers’ Chalo Delhi March Continues Amid Clashes and Traffic Congestion: Top 10 Developments

As the protesting farmers clashed with police on the Punjab-Haryana border on Tuesday, marking the beginning of what they termed a long haul, their Chalo Delhi march was halted for the night. However, determined to press on with their demands, the farmers vowed to resume their march and attempt to cross the border again today.

The clashes resulted in injuries to many farmers, prompting the Punjab government to sound an alert to hospitals in Sangrur, Patiala, Dera Bassi, Mansa, and Bathinda. Meanwhile, Haryana police resorted to dropping tear gas shells using drones to prevent the protesters from crossing the border, resulting in injuries to some policemen as well.

Here are the top 10 developments:

Traffic Congestion Grips New Delhi: Commuters in New Delhi faced heavy traffic snarls due to heightened security measures around the city’s borders. Similar traffic congestion is anticipated on Wednesday as the situation remains tense.

Farmers Break Through Barricades: Despite facing resistance, the farmers managed to break past at least three layers of barricades, including concrete barriers and barbed wires. They halted their march for the night and camped at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders.

Injuries Prompt Hospital Alert: Following the clashes, the Punjab government alerted hospitals near the border to prepare for treating injured protesters.

Government Ready to Talk: Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda expressed readiness for dialogue, but farmers’ evolving demands pose challenges. Union Minister Anurag Thakur acknowledged the government’s acceptance of several demands but highlighted the need for broader consultations on issues like India’s stance in the World Trade Organisation.

Political Statements: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi pledged legal guarantees for Minimum Support Price (MSP) and vowed to implement the Swaminathan report if his party comes to power. However, Union Minister Anurag Thakur accused Congress of misleading the public and questioned why MSP laws weren’t enacted during their tenure.

Unprecedented Use of Drones: Drone tear smoke launchers were deployed against the farmers for the first time, raising concerns. Patiala’s deputy commissioner intervened, urging restraint in the use of drones to prevent escalation.

Protesters’ Determination: Undeterred by the clashes, protesters affirmed their commitment to the march, equipped with six months’ worth of supplies. Reports suggest that smaller groups of farmers from ashrams and gurdwaras near Delhi may join the protests.

Traffic Diversions: Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories for traffic diversions around Tikri, Jharoda, and Dhansa borders between Delhi and Haryana.

Internet Suspension Extended: Haryana extended the suspension of mobile internet in several districts till February 15 as a precautionary measure.

Amidst escalating tensions and evolving political dynamics, the farmers’ Chalo Delhi march remains a focal point, underscoring the persistent struggle for agrarian rights and reforms in India.
