Russian Ambassador Urges UN Reform, Backs India’s Permanent UNSC Membership

The Russian Ambassador to India, Denis Alipov, has emphasized the urgent need for reforms within the United Nations (UN) and its affiliated agencies. Speaking in an interview with RT news agency, Ambassador Alipov made a strong case for India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC).

Ambassador Alipov highlighted India’s potential to contribute significantly to global peace and security as a permanent member of the UNSC. He praised India’s track record during its non-permanent membership in the UNSC in 2021-2022, citing its successful leadership and consensus-building abilities.

“We are of the view that India as a permanent member of the Security Council could make a significant contribution to promoting balance as well as an agenda focused on the interests of the world majority, primarily the countries of the Global South,” Ambassador Alipov stated.

Addressing concerns of polarization within the UN, Ambassador Alipov underscored the importance of broad consensus in expanding the Security Council. He expressed doubts about the overrepresentation of Western countries in the UN and advocated for greater representation from Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

India-Russia Bilateral Relations:

Ambassador Alipov praised the growing trade and economic ties between India and Russia, describing them as unprecedented. He highlighted Russia’s role as one of India’s main trading partners, particularly in the supply of hydrocarbons, mineral fertilizers, agricultural products, and diamonds.

“Our trade and economic cooperation has reached an unprecedented level. Russia is one of India’s four main trading partners,” Ambassador Alipov emphasized.

The ambassador also emphasized the robust strategic partnership between India and Russia, rooted in historical ties and shared interests. He highlighted extensive defense cooperation, joint military exercises, co-development of advanced military platforms, and technology transfers as key aspects of the bilateral relationship.

Energy collaboration, particularly in the nuclear sector, was highlighted as another significant pillar of bilateral cooperation. Ambassador Alipov underscored Russia’s expertise in nuclear technology and its role in advancing India’s capabilities in this field.

In conclusion, Ambassador Alipov reiterated Russia’s support for India’s permanent membership in the UNSC and emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms within the UN to better reflect contemporary realities and ensure a more equitable representation of countries worldwide.
