In the midst of escalating political tension in the Maldives, the government coalition comprised of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC) has firmly declared its stance against any attempts to remove President Mohamed Muizzu from office through Parliament. The announcement comes in response to reports indicating that the main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), intends to submit a motion for the president’s impeachment.
During a press conference on Monday, PPM Parliamentary Group (PG) leader Ahmed Saleem, representing the Eydhafushi constituency, vehemently stated the coalition’s determination to prevent the impeachment proceedings initiated by the MDP. Saleem was quoted as saying, “We will not allow them any opportunities to go ahead with this. They will have to kill us all first before they can even think of removing the President from office.”
The coalition emphasized its unwavering stance against the potential impeachment, emphasizing that such an event would be thwarted despite the intentions of the MDP and its breakaway faction, The Democrats.
The brewing political turmoil follows clashes that erupted in Parliament on Sunday, sparked by differences over the approval of four members of President Muizzu’s cabinet. Pro-government MPs clashed with opposition lawmakers after the MDP and The Democrats decided to withhold parliamentary approval for the cabinet members.
Despite the mounting pressure from the opposition, Muizzu’s supporters remain steadfast in their defense of the president. MP Ahmed Thoriq asserted that the results of the previous presidential election underscored that the country’s direction did not align with the MDP’s wishes. Thoriq dismissed the opposition’s efforts as futile, citing instances of members deviating from party directives during recent parliamentary votes.
