NASA’s Hubble Telescope Detects Water in Atmosphere of “Blazing-Hot” Exoplanet

A groundbreaking discovery by astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has revealed the presence of water molecules in the atmosphere of an exoplanet located 97 light-years away from Earth. Named GJ 9827d, this small yet fiery world, approximately twice the diameter of Earth, offers tantalizing insights into the potential prevalence of water-rich atmospheres on rocky planets beyond our Solar System.

“This would be the first time that we can directly show through atmospheric detection, that these planets with water-rich atmospheres can exist around other stars,” remarked team member Bjorn Benneke of the Trottier Institute for Research on Exoplanets at Université de Montréal. “This is an important step toward determining the prevalence and diversity of atmospheres on rocky planets.”

Co-principal investigator Laura Kreidberg of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany, emphasized the significance of the discovery, stating, “Water on a planet this small is a landmark discovery. It pushes closer than ever to characterizing truly Earth-like worlds.”

While water is essential for life as we know it, the searing temperatures of GJ 9827d make it unlikely to harbor any form of life. Nonetheless, astronomers are eager to unravel the mysteries of this enigmatic world’s atmosphere.

The findings of the study, published in a report in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, represent a significant milestone in exoplanet research. However, the research team remains uncertain about the nature of the exoplanet’s atmosphere.

“Our observing program…was designed specifically to not only detect the molecules in the planet’s atmosphere but to look specifically for water vapor,” explained Pierre-Alexis Roy, the lead author of the study. “Either result would be exciting, whether water vapor is dominant or just a tiny species in a hydrogen-dominant atmosphere.”

With temperatures akin to those of Venus, GJ 9827d presents a challenging environment, where a water-rich atmosphere would likely evaporate into steam. The planet’s atmosphere could either resemble a hydrogen-rich mini-Neptune or a warmer version of Jupiter’s moon Europa, with abundant water beneath its surface.

As scientists continue to study GJ 9827d and similar exoplanets, the quest to understand the diversity of atmospheres in our galaxy takes a significant step forward. These findings open new avenues for exploring the potential habitability of distant worlds and the fundamental processes shaping planetary atmospheres.

“The planet GJ 9827d could be half water, half rock,” speculated Benneke, highlighting the intriguing possibilities awaiting further investigation.
