Beijing,A devastating landslide in the remote and mountainous Zhenxiong County in Yunnan province, southwestern China, buried 47 people early on Monday, according to state media reports. The landslide occurred at 5:51 am local time, burying approximately 18 households and prompting the urgent evacuation of over 200 people from the affected area.
Authorities have launched an emergency response, mobilizing more than 200 rescue workers, along with dozens of fire engines and other equipment. Images shared on social media depict emergency workers braving snowfall as they navigate through collapsed structures in the aftermath of the disaster.
While the scale of the tragedy is evident, authorities have not immediately confirmed whether there are casualties resulting from the landslide. Rescue efforts are underway, with footage showing firefighters diligently working to extract trapped individuals from affected homes.
Landslides are unfortunately common in the Yunnan province, characterized by its rugged terrain. The region, often grappling with poverty, faces frequent natural disasters due to its proximity to steep mountain ranges and the Himalayan plateau.
The cause of the landslide remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing to determine the factors contributing to the disaster. Zhenxiong experienced freezing temperatures around minus four degrees Celsius (24.8 degrees Fahrenheit) on Monday morning.
China has witnessed several natural disasters in recent months, often linked to extreme weather events. In September, rainstorms triggered a mountain landslide in Guangxi, leading to at least seven fatalities. Similar incidents occurred in Xi’an in August and Sichuan province in June, underscoring the vulnerability of remote and mountainous regions to such calamities. As rescue and recovery efforts continue in Zhenxiong, the nation grapples with the impact of yet another tragic event.
