India Strongly Condemns Loss of Lives in Israel-Hamas Conflict at UN General Assembly

India, in a stern response to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, condemned the large-scale loss of civilian lives, particularly among women and children, during a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting. Ruchira Kamboj, India’s permanent representative to the United Nations, labeled the situation an “alarming humanitarian crisis” and expressed India’s zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.

Addressing the UNGA, Kamboj emphasized the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy. She highlighted that while condemning the civilian deaths, India is also aware of the terror attacks in Israel that triggered the current escalation. India has consistently conveyed a clear message to prevent further escalation, ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid, and work towards restoring peace and stability.

India’s envoy underscored the country’s efforts to normalize the situation in Gaza, emphasizing continuous engagement with leaders in the region, including Israel and Palestine. Kamboj revealed India’s provision of 70 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including medicine and medical supplies, to Gaza. Additionally, India contributed USD 5 million, with USD 2.5 million provided at the end of December 2023 to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine refugees.

India’s stance aligns with the call for humanitarian assistance, and Kamboj expressed hope that Security Council Resolution 2720 would enhance such aid. The resolution aims to support core programs and services for Palestinian refugees, covering education, healthcare, relief, and social services.

The conflict, which began on October 7 following a Hamas attack that claimed around 1,200 Israeli lives, has resulted in ongoing clashes between Israel and Hamas. Despite international pressure, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has affirmed Israel’s commitment to continuing the war until victory. The latest data from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza reports 23,210 lives lost, with numerous injuries and displacements.

India’s strong condemnation at the UNGA signals its commitment to a peaceful resolution and humanitarian assistance amid the deepening crisis in the region.
