At the Mega Pan India Roundtable 2023 organized by Galatta Plus, filmmaker Karan Johar didn’t hold back in showering high praise on Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s latest offering, “Animal.” Seated beside Vanga during the roundtable conversation, Johar declared that “Animal” is, without a doubt, the best film of the year and emphasized that its success marks a significant game-changer in the industry.
Johar, known for his candid expressions, shared insights into his personal experience with the film. “People have come up to me after I spoke about how much I loved ‘Animal’ and said, ‘You have made Rocky Aur Rani.’ That’s the vaccination for a film like ‘Animal.’ It’s the opposite extreme,” said Johar, acknowledging the diversity in cinematic tastes. He added, “I cannot disagree with you more because ‘Animal,’ to me, is the best film of the year.”
The director revealed that it took him some time and courage to make such a statement, considering the fear of judgment within the industry. Drawing a parallel with his experience during the release of “Kabir Singh,” he highlighted the importance of expressing genuine opinions irrespective of potential criticism.
Johar’s admiration for “Animal” stems from its bold and conviction-based narrative storytelling. He praised the film for breaking traditional cinematic norms, pushing boundaries, and offering a fresh perspective. Johar expressed his astonishment at the film’s unique sequences, citing an interval block where the hero faces adversity while a song plays, showcasing the film’s distinctive and unconventional approach.
“I had tears in my eyes, but there was only blood. So I was like something is wrong with me or something is wrong with him, but something put together is very right about this film,” Johar shared, highlighting the emotional impact of the climax. He commended Vanga’s distinct and individualistic filmmaking style, calling it genius.
“Animal” revolves around a complex father-son relationship, with Ranbir Kapoor portraying Rannvijay Singh seeking revenge after an attempt on his father’s life. The film, boasting a stellar cast including Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Shakti Kapoor, Triptii Dimri, Prithviraj, and Siddhant Karnick, has surpassed ₹500 crore at the domestic box office, solidifying its success.
Johar concluded by acknowledging the game-changing nature of “Animal’s” success, noting that the film’s conviction is something he aspires to achieve in his own work. The film has not only captivated audiences but has also left an indelible mark on industry stalwarts like Karan Johar.
