Dense Fog Causes Flight Delays and Transportation Disruptions in Delhi

A red alert for dense fog has been issued in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, leading to significant disruptions in flights and transportation. Over 100 flights, both domestic and international, were delayed at the Delhi airport, affecting arrivals and departures. The New Delhi Railway Station also reported delays in 22 trains, leaving passengers stranded in cold weather conditions.

Despite a marginal improvement in air quality, with the average Air Quality Index (AQI) settling at 356, the air quality is expected to remain in the “very poor” category for the next two days. Dense fog, as observed in INSAT imagery released by the Met department, has affected regions in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and northwest Madhya Pradesh, leading to low visibility, traffic disruptions, and accidents.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) extended its warning, predicting dense fog over Haryana and Punjab for the next five days, and Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience dense fog for the next three days. The UP State Road Transport Corporation issued guidelines for bus operations during low visibility conditions.

The Delhi Airport Authority issued an advisory cautioning that flights not compliant with CAT III standards may face disruptions. The IMD emphasized potential health risks associated with dense fog, highlighting the presence of particulate matter and pollutants that could adversely affect respiratory health.
