Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Responds to US Allegations of Assassination Plot

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has responded to recent allegations of an assassination plot against a US citizen, stating that he would “look into” any evidence provided. In an interview with the Financial Times, Modi emphasized India’s commitment to the rule of law and stated that the country is ready to investigate if a citizen is accused of any wrongdoing. The US had accused India of plotting the assassination of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the general counsel for the separatist group Sikhs for Justice, labeling him a terrorist.

Modi expressed deep concern over the activities of certain extremist groups operating overseas and engaging in intimidation and inciting violence. He highlighted the mature and stable partnership between India and the US, stressing that a few incidents should not be linked to diplomatic relations. Modi underscored the strong bipartisan support for the bilateral relationship, especially in the areas of security and counter-terrorism cooperation.

Last month, the US Department of Justice unsealed an indictment implicating a serving Indian government official in orchestrating the assassination plot. India acknowledged receiving inputs from the US and announced the formation of a high-level investigation committee to examine the issue.

Despite the controversy, India-US ties remain strategic and cooperative, with both nations recognizing the era of multilateralism and the interconnected nature of the world. The recent 2+2 dialogue held in New Delhi further demonstrated the ongoing collaboration between India and the US.
