Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan Placed on 14-Day Judicial Remand in Corruption Case

Islamabad, Pakistan — Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been placed on a 14-day judicial remand in a corruption case. The decision was made by a special court in Islamabad, which rejected the plea of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to grant physical custody to further investigate Khan.
The corruption case in question is related to the Al-Qadir Trust, with Khan being accused, along with his wife, of obtaining billions of rupees and land from Bahria Town Ltd. The alleged aim was to legalize ₹50 billion that was identified and returned to Pakistan by the United Kingdom during the previous PTI government.
Imran Khan has been incarcerated in the high-security Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi since September 26 in various cases. The latest development comes after NAB pressed for Khan’s physical remand, but the judge rejected the plea, opting for a 14-day judicial remand instead.
During the hearing, Khan’s counsel, Sardar Latif Khosa, opposed the physical remand, deeming it unnecessary and accusing NAB of engaging in “political engineering and political vendetta.” Khosa quoted Khan, saying that the NAB officials spent most of their time engaging in casual conversation rather than focused interrogation.
Imran Khan and his wife face allegations of misleading the cabinet by concealing facts related to the settlement agreement, money laundering, and obtaining illegal benefits from Bahria Town Ltd. The case revolves around the illegal acquisition of land for and construction of Al Qadir University, with alleged unlawful benefits given in the recovery of prime proceeds through the UK’s National Crime Agency in a money laundering case against real estate tycoon Malik Riaz and his family.
Khan’s judicial remand adds another layer to the legal challenges faced by the former Prime Minister, who has been in jail since August 5, following his arrest due to a conviction in the Toshakhana Case. Separately, Khan and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi are set to appear before a special court on Tuesday in the cipher case, where they are accused of violating the secret laws of the country.
The proceedings of the case will be held outside the jail, following a ruling by the Islamabad High Court last week against conducting the trial within the jail premises. As legal battles continue, Imran Khan finds himself entangled in multiple cases, each contributing to the complex political landscape of Pakistan.
