Supreme Court Warns Patanjali Against False Advertisements

The Supreme Court of India has cautioned Patanjali Ayurved, co-founded by yoga guru Ramdev, against disseminating “false” and “misleading” claims in advertisements about the curative properties of its medicines. The court issued the warning while hearing a plea from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which alleged that Patanjali engaged in a smear campaign against the vaccination drive and modern medicines.

The court directed Patanjali Ayurved to cease false advertisements immediately and warned of serious consequences for any such infractions, including the possibility of imposing a fine of ₹1 crore on each product making false claims.

The court, during a previous hearing in August 2022, had issued notices to the Union health ministry, Ministry of Ayush, and Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. The IMA had raised concerns about misleading medical advertisements, and the court emphasized the need to restrain Ramdev from criticizing allopathy and practitioners of other medical systems. The bench will resume hearing the IMA’s plea on February 5, 2023.

This development highlights ongoing concerns regarding the regulation of advertisements and claims made by companies in the healthcare and wellness sector, particularly those related to herbal and traditional medicines. The court’s warning underscores the importance of accurate and responsible communication in the healthcare industry to protect public health and prevent misinformation.
