India and Malaysia recently co-chaired a bilateral Joint Commission Meeting (JCM) to strengthen their diplomatic ties and explore new areas of cooperation. The meeting, held after a gap of 12 years, saw both nations discuss various aspects of their partnership, such as digital innovation, fintech, semiconductors, and space exploration. This meeting marked a significant step in fortifying the strategic relationship between the two countries.
Crucial Strategic Partnership
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted Malaysia’s position as a vital strategic partner for India. He underlined that Malaysia is among India’s top ten trading partners and the third-largest trading partner within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This bilateral partnership contributes to the growth and development of both nations and has an impact on the broader ASEAN region.
The Joint Commission Meeting served as a platform to explore emerging areas of cooperation. Both nations aim to deepen their collaboration in sectors such as digital technology, renewable energies, semiconductor manufacturing, and space exploration. Additionally, their partnership extends to regional and global matters, including discussions about the Indo-Pacific region, ASEAN, West Asia, and other global issues.
Memorandum of Understanding and Diplomatic Training
The meeting witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Prasar Bharti and Radio Television Malaysia (RTM). This agreement promotes cooperation in the media sector, fostering cultural exchange and information sharing. Furthermore, a pact was signed between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and Malaysia’s Institute of Diplomacy and Foreign Relations, focusing on diplomatic training and educational collaboration.
In 2022, India and Malaysia marked 65 years of diplomatic relations. Their partnership was elevated to an enhanced strategic partnership in 2015, and a roadmap for cooperation was issued in 2017. As both nations continue to develop their alliance, this meeting allowed them to comprehensively review their bilateral relations and strategize ways to strengthen their partnership further.
Robust Trade Relations
Trade is a significant aspect of the relationship between India and Malaysia. In 2022, India was Malaysia’s 11th largest trading partner, with total trade valued at $19.63 billion. This figure represents a substantial increase of 23.6% compared to the previous year, highlighting the growing economic ties between the two nations.
The India-Malaysia Joint Commission Meeting not only reiterates their shared commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties but also demonstrates their readiness to explore new areas of cooperation in the modern world.
