Turkish President Erdogan Expresses Support for India’s UNSC Permanent Membership As Part of Wider Reforms

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has extended his support for India’s aspiration to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). During a media briefing, Erdogan conveyed that Turkey would take pride in seeing a country like India attain permanent membership in the UNSC.

Erdogan’s statement carries significant weight as he advocates for a broader reform of the UNSC, emphasizing that all non-P5 members should have the opportunity to become Security Council members through a system of rotation.

In his remarks, Erdogan referred to the P5, which comprises the five permanent members of the Security Council—China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US. He noted that the world is much more extensive and diverse than these five nations alone, emphasizing the need for greater inclusivity and representation.

He stated, “We would be proud if a country like India became a permanent member of the UN Security Council. As you know, the world is bigger and larger than five.” Erdogan’s sentiments underscore a global call for reform in the UN system, seeking to address the evolving geopolitical landscape and enhance international cooperation.

Erdogan’s support for India’s bid for a permanent seat in the UNSC aligns with the broader movement for reforms aimed at making the Security Council more representative and responsive to contemporary global challenges. It reflects a growing consensus among nations for a more inclusive and equitable global governance structure that can effectively address the diverse array of global issues facing the world today.
