Disaster focus: 71 died in Uttarakhand landslide with financial loss of ₹75,000 crore and 10 died in Himachal

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said, through landslides in Himachal Pradesh there are 71 people died in the last three days and the state is now facing a financial loss of ₹75,000 crore in this monsoon. It will take at least a year to restore the infrastructure that was washed away by the rain.

Causes of rainfall in Himachal than the seasonal average

•Himachal has already received more than the seasonal average rainfall till August. During this year’s 54 days of monsoon, the state received 742 mm of rainfall against the seasonal average of 730 mm.

•The rainfall recorded in the state this July broke all monthly records in the last 50 years, leading to the most devastating natural disaster in the last 50 years.

Himachal Pradesh rain: Indiscriminate construction to blame, says CM

According to the Chief Minister, as quoted by the Indian Express, faulty structural design and indiscriminate construction work by foreign architects who do not know the scientific methods of hill construction are to blame for the landslides. The old multi-storied government buildings are standing tall without facing any danger, the CM added.

10 dead in Uttarakhand rain, landslide

The Uttrakhand fury has killed 10 so far, while the administration has rescued 293 pilgrims stranded on the route to the Madmaheshwar temple in Rudraprayag since Monday. A landslide hit Lakshman Jhula on Monday, burying six people at Night Paradise Camp resort in Lakshman Jhula area in rubble.

Punjab’s Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur and Rupnagar worst hit by floods

Punjab’s Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, Rupnagar came under water due to release of excess water from Bhakra and Pong dams. The Gurdaspur district administration has declared holidays in government and private schools in flood-affected villages until further orders, while Rupnagar authorities have declared holidays in schools and Anganwadi centers in the affected areas on August 17-18.
