China Landslide: 21 died, 6 lost in Heavy rain mountain floods and landslides hit Chang village

21 people died and six others are missing on Sunday evening after heavy rains hit the Xi’an region of China’s Shaanxi province, leading to mountain floods and mudslides on Friday evening. Heavy rain, mountain floods and mudslides hit Chang Village, Xi’an District around 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Two houses and 21 sections of National Highway 210 were damaged due to the disaster.

In addition, the disaster damaged three electricity supply infrastructures and left 900 households without power, citing the Xi’an Bureau of Emergency Management.

The city of Xi’an immediately set up an on-site command center and deployed 14 rescue teams, including fire and police departments with more than 980 personnel, to conduct disaster search, rescue and relief operations.

In addition, 1,100 units of equipment and tools including life detectors, satellite phones, diggers and search and rescue dogs have been deployed to conduct search, rescue and rescue operations, according to a Global Times report.

As of Sunday evening, 186 residents have been relocated and resettled, and three severely damaged sections of state road 210 have been restored. Work is underway on 21 moderately damaged road sections, and communications have been restored in 49 affected regions. Meanwhile, power was restored to 855 households.

Preliminary investigations revealed that two houses in the village were washed away and nearby roads, bridges, power supplies and other infrastructure were damaged. The Xi’an Department of the Shaanxi Armed Police Force has deployed more than 100 personnel to the affected area. Preliminary search and rescue operations are underway in the affected area.

By Sunday morning, emergency services had moved 81 residents and 11 vehicles to safety and were assisting in the search for four dead villagers. A local villager said the flooding and landslides started after one or two hours of heavy rain on Friday afternoon.

Local firefighters, police and emergency management agencies are making efforts to coordinate rescue operations. After receiving the report, China’s Ministry of Emergency Management dispatched a task force to the disaster site to assist with rescue and response.
