The Supreme Court dismissed a plea seeking cancellation of the CBFC certification of the film ‘Adipurush’

The Supreme Court on Friday stayed proceedings before various high courts against the makers of the film ‘Adipurush‘. The Supreme Court also issued a notice of appeal filed by the filmmakers against the Allahabad High Court order asking them to appear before it on July 27.

The Supreme Court also refused to entertain a plea seeking cancellation of CBFC certification for the film. “Everybody is distrustful of everything now…tolerance for movies, books is going down,” Justice SK Kaul observed, denying relief under Article 32.

“Adipurush”, a retelling of the epic Ramayana, has come under fire for its dialogues and use of colloquial language.

The bench, which also includes Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, issued a notice to the parties in the case. The Allahabad High Court on June 30 directed the makers of the film to appear before it on July 27 and told the central government to form a committee to give its opinion on the film.

It heard separate petitions by Kuldeep Tiwari and Naveen Dhawan seeking a ban on the film.

The Supreme Court directed director Om Raut, producer Bhushan Kumar and dialogue writer Manoj Muntashir to appear before it on 27 July.

It also directed the central government to set up a five-member commission to give its opinion on the film whether it hurt public sentiments.

In the order, it also ordered the government to review the decision to grant the film certificate.

The apex court said that the secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) will submit their personal affidavits informing it whether the guidelines for certifying a film for public screening have been followed in letter and spirit.
