Liverpool has advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, but the English club getting a scare when Inter threatened an upset in the second leg on Tuesday at Anfield.
Inter had a chance to make history with Lautaro Martinez’s amazing goal, but Liverpool booked their place in the last eight after Alexis Sanchez was sent off.
After a 2-0 setback in the first leg, the pressure was squarely on Inter, and for a brief time midway through the second half, a great Anfield comeback of a different color appeared on the cards. The visitors’ lead was cut in half thanks to a sensational shot from Lautaro Martinez.
However, hope did not last forever. It was only a minute long. Inter were reduced to 10 men as Alexis Sanchez received his second yellow card, and the uphill challenge now became mountainous. Jurgen Klopp introduced his wise old head in midfield, and Liverpool was able to finish the game comfortably.
Bayern Munich was everything from subdued on its’ return to Munich at Allianz Arena after a 1-1 draw in Austria in the first leg.
For the second time in as many games, Lewandowski led the way for Julian Nagelsmann’s side, scoring two penalties after being felled twice by Maximilian Wober, then blocking a clearing from goalkeeper Philipp Kohn and tapping in to complete a hat-trick in less than 23 minutes.
With a fourth goal just before half-time, Serge Gnabry all but sealed Bayern’s spot in the final eight, but there was no let-up after that. Thomas Muller happily assisted himself to two goals, each side of Maurits Kjaergaard’s great consolation, with Leroy Sana slamming home number seven late on – it was the Bavarian team’s record seventh goal in a tournament game.
The Reds, who were denied by the woodwork, once on each side of the halftime by Joel Matip and Mohamed Salah, and again in the closing minutes by Salah, have advanced to the quarter-finals.
