Cyclone “Biparjoy” becomes an extremely strong storm that will cross the coast of Gujarat and reach Pakistan by the 15th june

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that Very Severe Cyclonic Storm (VSCS) ‘Biparjoy’, located over the East-Central Arabian Sea, intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm at 5.30 am.

IMD’s latest tweet read, “VSCS BIPARJOY strengthened to ESCS at 0530IST today, about 480 km SSW of Porbandar, 530 km SSW of Dwarka and 610 km SSW of Naliya. According to IMD, VSCS ‘Biparjoy’ is likely to move almost northward on Thursday and reach near Pakistan and adjoining coast of Saurashtra and Kutch.

Earlier IMD reported, “VSCS BIPARJOY was centered at 2330IST today, near Lat 17.4 N and Long 67.3 E, about 600 km SW of Mumbai, 530 km S-SW of Porbandar and 830 km SW of Karachi . likely to reach near Pakistan and adjacent coast of Saurashtra and Kutch around A/N 15 Jun as VSCS.”

In a bulletin, the IMD said, “Very severe cyclonic storm ‘Biparjoy’ (pronounced as ‘Biporjoy’) over East Central Arabian Sea has been moving nearly northward at 5 kmph during last 6 hours and centered at 2330 hrs IST on 10 June 2023 in the same area near 17.4°N and 67.3°E, about 600 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 530 km south-southwest of Porbandar, 580 km south-southwest of Dwarka, 670 km south-southwest of Naliya and 830 km south of Karachi.”

The IMD categorizes a system as a Cyclonic Storm when its 3-minute average maximum sustained wind speed falls between 63-88 kmph. Similarly, a severe cyclonic storm has winds between 89-117 km/h, a very severe cyclonic storm between 118-165 km/h and an extremely severe cyclonic storm between 166-220 km/h. Wind speed above 221 km/h leads to a super cyclone.

According to the local MeT department, heat waves continued in Rajasthan on Saturday while rains lashed parts of the state. Rains are likely to lash part of the state next week due to Cyclone Biparjoy. Southern and western parts of Rajasthan may witness showers on June 14-15. There is also a chance of rain along with thundershowers in Jodhpur and Udaipur districts.

Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and other coastal areas were put on high alert on Saturday after forecasters warned that ‘Biparjoy’ over the Arabian Sea would intensify in the next 24 hours. After high waves were observed at Tithal beach in Valsad on the Arabian Sea coast, it is closed for tourists till June 14.

The IMD has warned of heavy rainfall at isolated places in Kerala and coastal Karnataka in the next three days. Monsoon showers were supposed to arrive in Kerala on June 4, but the ‘Biparjoy’ formation delayed it.

 Heavy rains have swept through northwestern Pakistan, causing several houses to collapse and leaving at least 25 dead and 145 injured, authorities said. Rain and hail lashed Bannu, Lakki Marwat and Karak districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
