World Meteorological Day 2023: celebrate the founding of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), all you need to know

World Meteorological Day is celebrated every year on 23 March to commemorate the formal establishment of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in 1950. The day highlights “the vital role that ‘National Meteorological and Hydrological Services’ (NMHS) play in the safety and well-being of. society,” says the WMO website.

Meteorology is a field that deals with the atmosphere and its phenomena with a focus on weather forecasting.  NHMS, which is the backbone of the country’s national infrastructure, undertakes activities in the field of weather observation and understanding, thereby contributing to the protection of life, environment, sustainable development, international cooperation among others according to WMO.

World Meteorological Day is celebrated based on themes that reflect current weather, climate or water issues. As the world grapples with the effects of climate change, such as threats to crops, water crises, floods, heat waves, etc., “World Meeting Day” takes on even greater significance as an opportunity to reflect on our choices for the planet.

WMO – the UN’s authoritative voice on climate, weather and water – has its roots in the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), whose idea emerged from the Vienna International Meteorological Congress in 1873. This year, WMO celebrated “World Meteorological Day”. on the topic – “the future of weather, climate and water across generations.

“World Met Day 2023” highlights past achievements, current progress and future potential – from late 19th-century telegraphs and shipping forecasting to supercomputers and space technology, the WMO said. As this year marks the 150th anniversary of the WMO, the UN body said the occasion is also a reminder of our changing climate.
