Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged terrorism remains one of Pakistan’s major problems

Terrorism remains one of Pakistan’s major problems, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged on Wednesday as he condemned the attack on a police van in Lakki Marwat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The Pakistani Taliban, which shares a common line with the Afghan Taliban, claimed responsibility for the attack on a routine police patrol that killed all six officers in the vehicle. A spokesman for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) said a police van was ambushed while it was on its way to conduct a raid in the area.

Prime Minister Sharif expressed his condolences, saying on Twitter that “terrorism remains one of Pakistan’s major problems”. “Make no mistake. Terrorism continues to be one of Pakistan’s major problems. Our armed forces and police have fought the scourge bravely. No words are enough to condemn the terrorist attack on a police van in Lakki Marwat. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families,” he tweeted. Sharif.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah also condemned the attack on police personnel in Lakki Marwat and sought a report from the Chief Secretary and IG Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the incident. “Federal Home Minister Rana Sanaullah has strongly condemned the terrorist attack on a police van in Lakki Marwat and expressed concern over the incident. We have sought a report on the incident from the Chief Secretary and IG Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Expressing deep grief and regret over the martyrdom of police personnel,” his office tweeted .

The TTP has operated for years in northwest Pakistan, once a haven for terrorists from both sides of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border. The overthrow of the Western-backed government in Afghanistan by the Taliban encouraged Islamabad and the TTP to reach a peace deal through dialogue, but the talks have so far yielded no results. However, a ceasefire has been in effect since May.
