An IndiGo plane declared an emergency at the Delhi airport on Friday after one of its engines caught fire while taxiing, sources said. The Bengaluru-bound A320, with 184 people on board, later returned to the bay. The people were safely deported, sources said. Video on Twitter showed one of the plane’s engines on fire and sparks flying as it taxied to the airport. The incident took place around ten o’clock in the evening.
In a statement, IndiGo said the aircraft operating flight 6E2131 from Delhi to Bengaluru experienced an engine shutdown during take-off. “The take-off was aborted and the aircraft returned safely to the bay. All passengers are being accommodated on the replacement aircraft,” the statement said. Delhi Police officials said that the control room at the airport received a call from the CISF control room regarding the engine fire of the IndiGo plane.
The plane had 177 passengers and seven crew members. Later, the passengers were safely disembarked, they added. According to sources, the pilot of the SpiceJet aircraft, who was behind the IndiGo aircraft in the taxiing formation, alerted the air traffic controller about the engine fire.
DGCA says follow up action after detailed investigation
Aviation regulator DGCA on Saturday said it will take appropriate follow-up action after conducting a detailed investigation into the incident of the engine catching fire of the IndiGo plane at the Delhi airport. “The priority is to conduct a detailed investigation into the incident and find out the cause of the fire in the engine. Fortunately, the fire was quickly extinguished and the aircraft is now grounded,” DGCA chief Arun Kumar said. He said the engine that caught fire was an IAEV2500. It is manufactured by IAE International Aero Engines AG. “The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) will conduct a detailed study to check whether any such incidents involving these engines have occurred earlier. Appropriate follow-up action will be taken after investigation,” Kumar added.
