Proud moment through international ‘Blue Flag’ eco-label has been awarded to two new Indian beaches

In further recognition of India’s commitment to protect and preserve pristine coastal and marine ecosystems through holistic resource management, the globally recognized and sought after international ‘Blue Flag’ eco-label has been awarded to two new beaches – Minicoy Thundi Beach. and Kadmat Beach – both in Lakshadweep. This brings the number of Blue Flag certified beaches to twelve (12). The Minister for Environment, Forests and Climate Change Shri Bhupender Yadav announced this proud moment through a message on Twitter. he congratulated everyone and said that it is part of India’s relentless journey towards building a sustainable environment led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

Thundi Beach is one of the most pristine and picturesque beaches in the Lakshadweep archipelago, where the white sand is bordered by the turquoise blue waters of the lagoon. It is a paradise for swimmers and tourists. Kadmat beach is especially popular with excursion tourists who visit the island for water sports. It is a nature lover’s paradise with pearly white sand, blue lagoon water, mild climate and friendly locals. Both beaches have designated staff for beach cleanliness and maintenance; and for the safety and protection of swimmers. Both beaches meet all 33 criteria mandated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

Other Indian beaches on the blue list are Shivrajpur-Gujarat, Ghoghla-Diu, Kasarkod and Padubidri-Karnataka, Kappad-Kerala, Rushikonda-Andhra Pradesh, Golden-Odisha, Radhanagar-Andaman and Nicobar, Kovalam in Tamil Nadu and Eden in Puducherry beaches.

Background:

The Foundation for Environment Education in Denmark (FEE) awards a globally recognized eco-label – the Blue Flag certification. In order to receive this prestigious award, a series of strict environmental, educational, safety and access criteria must be met and maintained. Blue Flag’s mission is to promote sustainability in the tourism industry through environmental education, environmental protection and other sustainable development practices.
