Shashi Tharoor opened a public debate between the candidates for the Congress polls

Shashi Tharoor said the Nehru-Gandhi family held and will always hold a special place in the hearts of Congress party members. Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday said he would be open to the idea of a public debate between the Congress presidential candidates as it would generate interest in the party in a similar way to the recent leadership battle of the British Conservative Party to resources.

He also stated that the Nehru-Gandhi family held and will always hold a special place in the hearts of the members of the Congress Party. “The answer to the Congress’s current challenges lies in a combination of effective leadership and organizational reforms,” Tharoor said in an interview. Mallikarjun Kharge and Tharoor are in the fray in the Congress presidential poll after former Jharkhand minister KN Tripathi’s nomination was rejected on Saturday.

Talking about what he brings to the table, Tharoor said he has demonstrated a credible record of leadership at the highest levels of organisations, be it at the UN or as the founder-president of the All India Professional Congress. The former Union minister said he has outlined a set of priorities that he believes can help strengthen the Congress and take on the BJP machinery.

“Given that our current situation is widely deplored, it can be an advantage not to be burdened with the burden of spending too much time in the current party organization and to be able to approach it from a fresh perspective,” Tharoor said.

Asked about his views on a public debate between the party’s presidential candidates, Tharoor said he would be open to the idea. “There are no ideological differences between us; rather, it is about how we propose to go about achieving the goals we have already agreed upon,” he said.

As I have often pointed out, the exchange of ideas between candidates could have beneficial effects for the party – for example, we saw global interest in the British Conservative Party during their recent leadership contest, a phenomenon we already witnessed in 2019 when a dozen candidates emerged at the top to replace Theresa May and Boris Johnson,” Tharoor said. The date for scrutiny of nomination papers was October 1, while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is October 8. The final list of candidates will be out on October 8 at 5 pm. Voting, if necessary, will take place on October 17. Counting of votes will begin on October 19 and the results will be announced on the same day. More than 9,000 Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) delegates will vote in the poll.
