Snow Blankets Himachal Pradesh: Over 500 Roads Closed Amidst Winter Wonderland

Shimla, February 5, 2024 (HNN) – Himachal Pradesh, known for its picturesque landscapes, has turned into a winter wonderland, but not without its challenges. As the snowfall continues to blanket the region, the State Disaster Management Authority has reported the closure of at least 475 roads, including five national highways, disrupting regular life in the state.

The aftermath of the snowfall has also impacted crucial infrastructure, with 333 electricity supply schemes and 57 water supply schemes experiencing disruptions, adding to the woes of residents across the state.

According to the latest data released by the State Disaster Management Authority, various districts have been significantly affected, with closures reported in Chamba, Kangra, Kinnaur, Mandi, and Shimla. The closure of essential routes has posed challenges for commuters and residents alike, highlighting the urgency of snow-clearing operations.

Despite the challenges, authorities are actively engaged in snow-clearing operations, particularly in the Lahaul-Spiti region, where higher reaches received fresh snowfall. Lahaul Spiti police have been proactive in updating residents and tourists about weather conditions and road statuses through their social media channels.

The recent snowfall has not deterred tourists from visiting the scenic state, with a surge in tourist footfall observed since the beginning of the year. While neighboring North Indian states grapple with foggy conditions, Himachal Pradesh offers a picturesque escape with its snow-covered landscapes.

However, amidst the allure of snowfall, authorities have issued advisories urging people to exercise caution and assess weather conditions before embarking on journeys, emphasizing travel only when necessary.

The impact of heavy snowfall was evident earlier on Friday, with reports of over 566 road closures across various regions of Himachal Pradesh, including nearly six national highways. Additionally, approximately 700 electricity supply schemes faced disruptions, underscoring the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.

As the snowfall persists, authorities continue their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and travelers across Himachal Pradesh, navigating through the winter challenges with resilience and determination.
