Women’s CWC: England’s all-round effort crushes Pakistan

In Women’s CWC, England bowlers dismissed Pakistan for 105 runs before their batters easily chased down the mark at the Hagley Oval on Thursday to clinch a nine-wicket victory in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022.

Tammy Beaumont was sent back to the pavilion after scoring only two runs while chasing a 106-run mark. Danni Wyatt and skipper Heather Knight knitted an important relationship for England, providing a strong winning platform.

With a nine-wicket victory in just 19.2 overs, jubilation erupted in the England camp. Knight and Wyatt both stayed unbeaten on 76 and 24 respectively.

Katherine Brunt and Sophie Ecclestone both had taken three wickets earlier in the match, with the pacer taking the early wickets and the spinner cleaning up the lower order.

The only two batsmen for Pakistan who scored 20 or more were Sidra Ameen and Sidra Nawaz, while the remainder of the batting order had no answer for the English bowlers.

Brunt was instrumental in restraining Pakistan early on after winning the toss and deciding to bowl first. Brunt dismissed Nahida Khan for a duck with the opening delivery of the match, and sloppy running between the wickets saw Bismah Maroof (9) and Omaima Sohail (11) run out soon after, reducing Pakistan to 33/3.

The England team, led by Heather Knight, won the competition for the third time in a row. They now have six points and are on the verge of qualifying for the semi-finals. The squad is presently in fourth place, while India has slid to fifth place after six matches, with the same amount of points as England. With a higher net run rate, England is ahead of India.

Pakistan 105/10 (Sidra Ameen 32, Sidra Nawaz 23; Katherine Brunt 3-17); England 107/1 (Danni Wyatt 76*, Heather Knight 24*; Diana Baig 1-14); Pakistan 105/10 (Sidra Ameen 32, Sidra Nawaz 23; Katherine Brunt 3-17).
