Congress president Udit Raj regretted his “condescending” remarks against President Droupadi Murma, but said he would continue to raise questions and that the President must think before making a statement. “The phrase ‘namak khana’ has a deeper meaning. There was a mistake in the choice of word. I regret it. I will keep asking. I am not keen on contributions. I am a representative of SC/ST and it bothers me to see people who represent them doing nothing from his high position,” Udit Raj tweeted on Thursday evening.
The Congress leader was served a notice by the National Commission for Women for his derogatory comment on the President. Udit Raj clarified that his comments were personal and not for the President of India, but for a tribal representative – comments he can only make as a SC/ST representative, he said. “Had Dubey, Tiwari, Agarwal or Goel asked the same question, it would have been an insult to her contribution. But I have the right to ask questions to Adivasi and Dalir. These people become our representatives and then remain deaf and dumb. BJP respected me until I raised questions regarding SC/ST.”
The BJP hounded the Congress over Udit Raj’s comment and the fact that he used the phrase “deaf and dumb” in his clarifying comments. “Instead of apologizing for his ‘Chamcha’ remark on President Draupadi Murma, Udit Raj, emboldened by the support of Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, now calls President Murma ‘stupid and tone-deaf’. In the past, Kovind had called her deaf and dumb! Will Congress throw him out?” tweeted BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla.
The row erupted after Udit Raj condemned President Droupadi Murma’s comment that Gujarat produces 76% of the country’s salt and salt is consumed by all Indians. In his last tweet, where he regretted his words, he explained that the term “namak khana” has a deeper meaning.
