U.S. Slashes Tariffs on Low-Value Chinese Goods, Signaling Trade Thaw

In a shift aimed at easing economic friction, the United States has reduced ‘de minimis’ tariffs on low-value shipments from China to 30%, following a directive from the White House. The move offers targeted relief to Chinese e-commerce giants like Shein and Temu, whose low-cost products dominate U.S. online marketplaces.

The decision comes as part of a broader effort to de-escalate trade tensions between Washington and Beijing. However, the tariff relief is limited to individual consumer shipments and does not extend to large-scale commercial imports, which remain subject to higher duties under ongoing trade and security measures.

While the tariff cut benefits e-commerce flows, it also highlights continued barriers for Chinese exporters in other sectors. Analysts say this partial rollback may soften the impact of the trade war but is unlikely to significantly reverse the broader economic strain on China’s export-driven economy.
