Trinamool Congress lawmaker Mahua Moitra may face disqualification as the report from the Ethics Committee, recommending her expulsion over the “cash-for-query” charge, is set to be debated on Friday. The report, adopted by the committee on November 9, accuses Moitra of compromising national security by sharing her login credentials and password with an unauthorized person.
If the government moves a motion for her expulsion, Moitra, a first-term MP, could be disqualified. The report, which was initially listed for discussion on December 4 but was not tabled, will now be taken up after 12 noon, allowing opposition leaders, including Moitra, an opportunity to debate its findings.
Opposition members, including Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury, have called for a discussion on the recommendations before any decision is made on Moitra’s expulsion. Chowdhury, in a letter to the Speaker, highlighted the severity of the punishment and urged for a clear definition of unethical conduct.
The Ethics Committee’s report alleges that Moitra accepted “money — cash and kind, amenities and various other facilities” from businessman Darshan Hiranandani, with whom she shared login details. Moitra has denied the allegations.
The report also emphasizes the need for an “intense, legal, institutional inquiry” into Moitra’s conduct. The Home, IT, and External Affairs Ministries’ responses to the panel underscored the potential threats to national security posed by the leakage of credentials.
Moitra’s case has sparked debates on ethical conduct and the role of parliamentary committees. The committee’s recommendations, if adopted, could lead to significant repercussions, and the Opposition is demanding a comprehensive discussion on the matter.
