On Friday evening, a passenger train traveling at 75 km/h collided with a stationary goods train in Tamil Nadu, causing a serious derailment and leaving several passengers injured. The incident occurred around 8:30 pm at Kavaraippettai railway station in the Tiruvallur district, near Chennai.
Train 12578, the Mysuru–Darbhanga Bagmati Express, mistakenly entered a loop line instead of the main line and collided with a stationary goods train. The impact caused at least 12 coaches to derail, and a power car caught fire. The train was carrying 1,360 passengers, said Tiruvallur District Collector Dr. T Prabhushankar.
Nineteen passengers were injured, with four sustaining severe injuries and being rushed to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, no fatalities have been reported.
Rescue and Relief Operations
By midnight, stranded passengers were transported to Dr. MGR Chennai Central railway station via MTC buses. Early Saturday morning, a special train departed from Chennai Central, ensuring the remaining passengers reached their destination. Food and water were provided during the rescue operation.
Southern Railway’s General Manager, R N Singh, explained that the express train was on its way to Gudur when it was mistakenly diverted onto the loop line, colliding with the goods train from behind. The engine derailed due to the impact, and several scheduled trains were either cancelled or diverted as a result of the incident.
The Railways has ordered a high-level inquiry into the accident, and Chief Minister M K Stalin expressed shock and concern. He assured the public that the government was swiftly handling rescue and relief efforts, with the fire department working on clearing the derailed coaches.
Eighteen scheduled trains for October 12 have been cancelled due to the accident. Restoration efforts are underway, with rail services expected to resume on this route by Saturday evening.
